Department of Early Childhood Education
Based on Dongguk Universitys education ideals the department teaches theories of early childhood education and practical methods for applying them in education fields. To enlarge students' academic scope, we open courses which are combined with Buddhism. We teach professional knowledge of early childhood education and offer in-service training at educational spots to nurture specialists in education. When completing required teaching courses, students get level 2 qualification for kindergarten teachers and continue their study by attending graduate schools at home or abroad.
As the importance of early childhood education is generalized, our society tries to give equal chances to any child who wants to receive education and to improve the quality of education. Thus the early childhood-related industry has tremendous popularity and graduates successfully enter into society. Our department will do its best to develop better courses and programs for practicing standard and creative childhood education.
Objectives of Education
The goals of the department are:
To teach professional theories and practical methods in early childhood education
To nurture teachers who have professional knowledge from on-the-job training experience
To provide academic support for students to have wide knowledge of Buddhist-related traditional culture and thoughts.
We teach theories and practice of infant and child care, and we also teach theories of Buddhist early childhood education.
With the level 2 qualification for kindergarten teaching, graduates get employment in infant and child education institutions such as kindergartens, daycare centers, and child welfare centers.
Graduates not only work in educational institutions but also get positions in broadcasting for childhood, publishing companies, consulting centers, private institutions, and child care industries. Due to current issues in child education in society, the range of selection will be expanded. For further studies, some students apply for graduate schools at home or overseas.
Department of Home Economics Education
The department of home economics education was established in March 1981 with 40 students. The goal of the department is to cultivate home economics teachers for junior and senior high schools. Graduates also get positions as consumer consultants, cooks, counselors for adolescents, and clothing engineers. To carry on hands-on education, the department has a cooking lab, a clothing lab, a lab for work management, a food nutrition lab, a room for counseling youth, a computer lab, and an archive room. Four faculty members teach their majors respectively: studies of children and family, food and nutrition, clothing and life, and home management and consumerism. With a future oriented open mind, we set a long-term plan for raising well-educated students.
Objectives of Education
The primary goal is to produce home economics teachers for junior and senior high schools. To receive the certificate for teachers we teach 5 required courses: subject matter education, dietary life, clothing life, child and family, home management, and consumer science.
1) teachers with special knowledge in home economics
2) teachers who put emphasis on human education with future oriented open minds
3) teachers who practice their educational philosophy for the development of the local society.
It combines two different fields of pedagogy and home economics to apply it to educational sites.
To accomplish its characteristics, students study two areas of pedagogy and home economics. In pedagogy, the curriculum consists of 11 subjects for receiving a teacher's certificate. Home economics is divided into 4 areas: dietary life, clothing life, child and family, and home management and consumer science.
Food and nutrition teaches food science, cooking, nutriology, nutrition education. Clothing life teaches fashion design and clothing psychology. Home management and consumer science teach home management and consumer behavior.
Students who earn a teacher's certificate will be teachers at junior or senior high schools. There are many other fields for our students to get positions.
1) graduate school students
2) job training instructors
3) consumer consultants
5) consultants for children and juveniles
6) consultants for families
8) clothing engineers.
Department of Mathematics Education
Modern mathematics, which is abstracted through structural methodology from natural concepts, is the most powerful tool to grasp the essence of various natural and social phenomena. The range of application is broad in the natural science but also in other academic fields like humanities, sociology, and other sciences.
The department raises teachers who are able to educate junior and senior high school students with deep knowledge in mathematics and teaching methodologies.
The department also tries to teach students three key abilities which mathematicians should have:
to understand the fundamental mathematical concepts
to cultivate logical thinking for analyzing problems
to solve problems logically and systematically
Faculty and department assistants always make efforts to improve the quality of our education and environment to implement the above mentioned goals.
Objectives of Education
The department cultivates teachers who are able to understand students' tendency, to follow educational policies, and to contribute to the development of society.
The educational goals are:
1) Understanding basic and advanced mathematical concepts
2) Cultivating the ability of applying teaching methods to real educational sites
3) Solving problems logically and rationally with abundant experiences in educational media and applying theories
4) Cultivating high moral teaching standards and ethics.
Mathematics is an academic field which expresses phenomena in nature and society with formulas and then analyzes them. It is one of the most effective academic fields in modern society, and the number of mathematics classes displays a country's development index.
Most graduates get positions as teachers, and for further studies, some attend graduate schools. In the business world, graduates work in conglomerates and government offices as computing personnel.
In the future, applied mathematics majors and math education majors will have plenty of opportunities to enter professional society. There are a lot of cases in advanced countries where math majors play pivotal roles in various fields. This proves that mathematics is the basis of academic fields and the application of mathematics varies.
