Dongguk University WISE Campus held the “WISE Campus Name Proclamation Ceremony” at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at the main auditorium of the Centennial Memorial Hall.

The ceremony was attended by over 300 guests, including Seong-woo Seunim, the chairman of Dongguk University, domestic and foreign guests, Buddhist circles, donors, alumni, and students. The event was held according to the Buddhist ritual along with guest congratulatory speeches, WISE Campus promotional video screening, and celebratory performance.

The six achievements of reforming the constitution of the university were announced through the name declaration ceremony: First, reorganization of the academic structure to improve educational competitiveness and competition in entrance exams. Second, reduced the number of colleges from 10 to 6. Third, establishment of an integrated academic support service that provides counseling and academic guidance in one place. Fourth, over the past three years, securing unprecedented financial support, accounting for 62% of the support received in the last 10 years, with 36 billion won in government and local government financial support. Fifth, renovation of student welfare facilities such as the educational environment, student center, and playground in order to transform into a university where students are happy. Sixth, a campus that strengthens cooperation with local governments and develops together with the local community.

 In a congratulatory speech, Seong-woo Seunim, the chairman of Dongguk University corporation, said, “Dongguk University Gyeongju Campus, which opened in 1978 in Gyeongju, the capital of culture and history, has developed with the support of temples, Buddhists, and cooperation between local governments and companies. Thanks to the support, we have made a fresh start today as Dongguk University WISE Campus opens a new future. I sincerely hope that the campus will become a campus that grows together with the local community and that it can become a place of reliance for local people.” 

Dongguk University WISE Campus President, Yi, Young Kyoung, said that since  Dongguk was founded as  Gyeongju University in 1978, it has grown as a regional representative university, and it has been reborn with a new name, WISE, which embodies the founding philosophy and aims for future values. She also emphasized that the campus will not stop making efforts for change and innovation in the future, and will become the best university in the region to nurture Wisians who are smart students destined for talented futures. 

 
The ceremony was broadcast live on YouTube, and more than 100 students, including the student council, scholar monks, Buddhist association, school corps cadets, shooting club, canoe club, and foreign students were invited.
 

The meaning of the name WISE is Wise Innovation, Smart Evolution. It refers to a university that develops through wise innovation, and smart evolution based on the founding philosophy.
